This is an atom-

To tell you about the atom I will use the Neon atom. The Neon atom has an atomic number of 10 and an atomic mass of 20 (rounded). If the atom has 10 as the atomic number, than the atom will have 10 protons and 10 electrons. To find out the number of neutrons you have to take the atomic mass, 20, minus the atomic number, 10 and the outcome of that is 10. So you will have 10 protons, neutrons and electrons in 1 Neon atom. If you want to know how to draw the element than go to the "Drawing the Elements" page.

Neutrons-Neutrons have no charge and are a part of the nucleus. To calculate the neutrons you have to subtract the atomic mass by the atomic number. In the paper model the neutrons play no major part. In the marble model they were in the center with the protons. In the live model people played the part of the neutrons.

Protons- Protons are the biggest and most important particle in the atom. To find the amount of protons in the atom you have to take the atomic number, and there you go. The atomic number is the number of protons. In the live model people played the part of the protons.

Electrons- Electrons are the negative change. The electrons fly around the nucleus. They often fly so fast that in diagrams they are shown as a cloud. The number of electrons are the atomic number just like protons. In the paper model they are the only thing you see flying around the nucleus. In the marble mode they are the yellow marbles. In the human model the run around.
